Alan is a computational biology researcher in the Bioinformatics Division of The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne. He is a postdoctoral fellow in the labs of Tony Papenfuss and Terry Speed. Prior to joining The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, he completed his PhD with Phil Green in the Department of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA.
Alan has published peer-reviewed work on diverse topics including patterns of mutation in human cancer genomes and mechanisms of gene regulation in the fruit fly *Drosophila melanogaster*. One of his primary research goals is to develop new software tools that enable novel applications of DNA sequencing technology, such as high-throughput mutagenesis. This work uses Python and its robust ecosystem of free and open source scientific programming libraries to analyze and visualize patterns in large and complex biological datasets, while making the results accessible to computational and experimental biologists alike.
